BIO 2010 opens with European countries seeking Indian biotech collaborations

BIO 2010 Bangalore saw speakers from European countries expressing a keen desire to extend collaboration with Indian biotech companies. Among the speakers at the ‘Bio Nations’ session were Mr Poul V Jensen, Director of European Business and Technology Centre (EBTC). Other speakers included those from Belgium, UK and Germany. A Dutch agricultural expert has cautioned India of a possible food crisis if the agricultural sector remains ignored for long. With India’s farm sector plagued by problems of irrigation and shortage of arable land, he advises the government to make new investments in agricultural infrastructure and in land reforms.

Jaipur: A Dutch expert on agriculture has warned India of a food crisis unless the country makes new investments in the sector and induces young individuals to take up farming. India will have to speed up its food production otherwise it will not remain self-sufficient in food in a few years’ time, he has warned. read more

Indian government looks at growing organic farming production

The Indian government is working to increase the country’s share in the growing organic farming sector in the global markets to $1 billion over the next five years. Growth figures of value of produce from $12 million to $125 million in the last eight years, with the additional benefits of achieving biodiversity while maintaining soil health, has encouraged support for the sector. read more

Indian BASIX Microfinance institution gets $26.5 million investments

Bharatiya Samruddhi Finance Limited (BSFL) is to get $26.5 million from four investors. This is the third round of equity funding for BSFL, a member of the Bhartiya Samruddhi Investment & Consulting Service Group.

The investors for the current infusion are existing investors Netherlands based Hivos-Triodos Fonds (HTF) and Mauritius-based company Lok Capital LLC. Matrix Partners India, an investment firm in Mumbai is investing $ 22.5 million in BSFL.

Indian BPO market to grow 25% in 2010

BANGALORE: The business process outsourcing (BPO) market in India is estimated to grow 19% through 2013, according to IT research and advisory firm Gartner.

The domestic India BPO services market grew by 7.3% year-on-year in 2009 primarily due to the global economic uncertainty which led to some price and volume pressures.

Gartner said in a statement it estimates the Indian domestic BPO market would grow into a $1.2 billion market by 2011 and grow to $1.8 billion by 2013. Read more..

India to implement National Knowledge Network over next 10 years

The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure (CCI) approved the setting up of the National Knowledge Network (NKN), with the implementation plans spread over the next 10 years. The network aims to inter-connect all knowledge institutions in the country through high-speed data communication network that will encourage sharing of knowledge and specialised resources and enable collaborative research. The project outlay is Rs 599 million.

GDP to grow at 8.5% in 2010-11, says Pranab

BANGALORE: The country has successfully overcome the effect of the global economic slowdown and the GDP is expected to grow at 8.5% during fiscal 2010-11, plus or minus 0.25%, said Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee. ‘‘So far as this financial year is concerned, it is coming to an end in a few days. The final figures would be known later, though we are sticking to the earlier estimate of 7.2% growth,’’ he said. Read more…

India wants aviation partners

The Indian aviation sector has shown definitive recovery in the past few months to clock a CAGR of 18 percent. As the ninth largest market globally, the sector requires 400 operational airports as against the present 90 operational airports, according to the Indian Civil Aviation Minister, Mr Praful Patel. He further expressed that there is capacity to absorb about 500 helicopters and 200-300 aircraft over the next five years. Expressing hope that India would be counted in the top five aviation markets in the next five years, he called on international players to partner the growth graph. The minister was addressing the participants at the inauguration of the Aviation 2010 event at Hyderabad, where the Netherlands and others have set up country pavilions. Read more
