Some highlights of the presentations

The presentation made by Mr. Jeroen Raijmakers enlightened the foresight of Philips in the healthcare sector. It is not just designing products but spaces that makes a more people friendly interaction. Their design also is very region specific to maintain privacy preferences for the patients.

The social responsibility that Philips is spearheading in India was a surprise to most of us. Their solutions for a healthier and ecofriendly stove for villages in India are one of many efforts Philips has undertaken in India.

Mr. Jos Oberdorf of NPK Design presented their work that ranged from electronic products to high speed railway tracks in the Dutch market. They have partnered with Elephant Design in India to preserve an Indian craft form of copper work. This project is under development and shall fiind an exclusive market here in Europe with the vision of Mr. Oberdorf. This partnership is an example of the fact that Indian and Dutch design languages can come together for a certain market segment.

Mr. Wiecher Munting from KPMG made the case of the express need to protect your substance and intellectual property as design firms. He spoke about the laws or support systems in place for tax benefits and revenues to make the Netherlands a hotspot for the creative industry. Mentioning a possibility of a 5% tax for R&D revenues (subject to your company structure and presence in the Netherlands) would put Netherlands way ahead of other countries offering a good haven for industries to set up their R&D functions.

Industrial Design Crossover

Industrial and Creative design are two of the strengths that Netherlands and India share in common. In the past decade, Netherlands, in addition to its already established industry of industrial design, has continued to reinvent and update it’s craft to maintain it’s international standard.

Meanwhile, India’s design has already reached international recognition. Business Week USA enlisted the National Institute of India in the 25 list of top European and Asian programs.

Recognizing the potential exchange of knowledge between Netherlands and India when it comes to innovative and world class quality designs, the Netherlands India Desk took a strong initiative to bring forth companies from both countries in a one of kind event to be held in Rotterdam this September.

Spearheaded by the Netherlands India Desk, this event is strongly supported by KPMG, Kamer van Koophandel Rotterdam, OBR and the City Government of Rotterdam.

The event was held on September 25, 2009.
